DIY Customizing an MDF Tissue Holder
To personalize the MDF Tissue Box Bases, you will need the following items.
- MDF Tissue Paper box
- Acrylic Colors
- Paintbrush applying paint
- decoupage paper
Here, we are using a rectangular MDF tissue box that has a see-through opening on the top of the base. You are free to choose any of your favorite MDF tissue holders or box as per your purpose of decor. If you're looking for an MDF tissue box, you can also get one at the Hobby India website. In order to apply artwork easily, you should ensure that the base should be smooth and sturdy.
Now, let us proceed with the steps:
1) Prime the base with Gesso
Apply the gesso on the entire MDF tissue box bases and make sure to fill every corner nicely. Gesso is the primer that offers the relevant surface to the artwork. Here, we are using plat brush to apply the primer but if you want you can also use the sponge instead.
Note: make sure to apply the even layer of gesso on the base. You can also apply the double coat of gesso if you need.
2) Paint the base with acrylic color
Use the light pink acrylic paint and coat the entire MDF tissue box with it. Once you apply the first layer of the acrylic paint, make the second color one shade darker. Then apply the second coat of acrylic color.
Note: As we are using the pinkish floral decoupage sheet, this color will complement the base. You can use any pastel color of your choice. Just make sure that it complements the decoupage sheet. Also, there is no compulsion on applying the two layers of acrylic color. You can apply the first base and let it dry.
3) Start moulding the clay
Here, we are using the light pink floral decoupage sheet. You can choose any design you want. After the paint dries, measure the size of the box and cut the sheet accordingly. When you cutting the decoupage sheet, make sure to leave the 1 or 2 centimeter extra space. Cut the entire sheet measuring the sides and the base.
Note: Do not cut the center see-through opening. We will cut the gap later.
Now take off the upper part of the decoupage tissue as that what we use. Some decoupage sheets have two layers, while others come in a single sheet. Be sure what sheet you are using.
4) Apply the Mod Podge
Once you cut off the sheet perfectly, take the Mod Podge to stick the sheet. This is a gloss but you can also use Matte if you feel like. Rather than applying the gloss in one go, always use the small patches and stick the sheet along. Then press and smoothen the stuck sheet with the help of hands to avoid any folds or creases to be formed.
Now, rub the brush (that contains the left over Mod Podge) again on the sheet to secure the paper further. Continue the same process for the rest of the parts.
5) Take out the Extra paper from the centre
To take out the extra tissue from the centre, take any thin fine liner brush and dip it into the water. Now, start going over the edges that you want to take off. Create the very thin outline with water you will notice how the area that has water will start to tear off naturally. Then push the brush inside the wet area and it will tear off easily. You will get the rough paper edges.
6) Sand off the rough edges
Wait for the paper to dry and then refine the edges with the help of sandpaper. Just take the sandpaper and go over the edges. This will give you a clean and smooth edge then. Then clean the metallic area of the box with the help of a damp cloth.
7) Varnish the base for the final look
When you're finished, it's time to varnish the base. Here, we're giving the MDF tissue holder base a shiny new finish with liquid glaze. This not only gives the box a beautiful glaze finish, but also makes it completely watertight.
